There are all sorts of people out there offering psychological services of all kinds. Honestly, the titles of everything psychology-related can be very confusing. It’s no wonder people shy away from accessing services until a crisis occurs, and by then the process can feel even more overwhelming. Though we work with clients throughout the lifespan, for the purpose of this blog post, we’re going to be talking directly to any parents out there who might be thinking about pursuing testing for their child or college student.
At C&C, we know that reaching out for help can bring anxiety with it, especially if you aren’t even sure what kind of help you need. With that in mind, we’re going to break things down a bit to demystify what we do and how we can help.
We are a boutique neuropsychological assessment and consultation service. “WHOA!” you may be saying. Already, there go lots of fancy sounding syllables bunched together, feeling stuffed with as much jargon as you can imagine.
Let’s simplify that a bit – we solve problems related to how people function. When you can’t seem to figure out why your child isn’t making headway at school, can’t seem to stay organized or focused, or is just too down in the dumps or nervous to make a move, WE CAN HELP.
Literally, we gather a ton of data from tests that measure all sorts of things – reading, problem solving, learning, memory, organization, managing emotions, handling stress, planning, and transitioning between tasks, to name a few. We crunch all those numbers and translate it into real world language with practical recommendations that help your child function at their very best in school and at home. We figure out where your child’s strengths are and where they may need some support in order to make the most of what they have going for them.
So, okay, we solve problems. But what does that look like EXACTLY? Simple, and thanks for asking!
Step 1. Come talk to us for a while, find out if testing makes sense for your family. We’re really nice, and (bonus!) it’s free.
Step 2. If you decide testing DOES make sense, make an appointment to come talk to us again for a bit longer -- as long as you and your child need to explain what’s going on that makes things feel harder than they should. We call this an “intake,” because we’re gathering lots of information about what makes your kid tick.
Step 3. Drop your child off for a day of testing. We even have SATURDAY appointments so nobody has to miss work or school!
Step 4. Give us a couple of weeks to score all those tests and come up with some thoughts, solutions and recommendations.
Step 5. Come back in so we can explain your results. We call this a “feedback session.” Ask as many questions as you want. Make sure the conclusions we came up with make sense to you and your child. Get some preliminary recommendations.
Step 6. Receive your freshly-written, individualized report. And, guess what, you can call and ask more questions…as many as you want, in fact!
So what makes C&C Psychological Services so different, specifically? Well, here’s the kicker. We do something that others don’t. We don’t just hand you the report and wish you well. We offer a year of services to you all included in the cost of testing.
What could that look like?
We can attend IEP meetings.
We will work collaboratively with the people in your child’s life, including therapists, prescribers, academic resource centers, and teachers, at your request.
We can offer resources for counseling, executive functioning coaches, OT and PT referrals, prescriber suggestions, and more.
All you have to do is call us. We promise we’ll answer.
So, there you go! That’s the basics, folks. Neuropsychological Assessment is a fancy term we use for figuring out why things feel too hard and solving the puzzle that is each unique person. We’re good at it, and you and your child will feel better having answers.
